Making Sugar Skulls – 5 extra points

Standard

By student suggestion and request, you are allowed to make Sugar Skulls for 1/2 points of extra credit (instead of doing one of the other 10 point options, you may not do both).

In order to get the 5 points, which will go on your 1st Quarter grade, you must make the sugar skulls (not hard to do, watch this tutorial HERE). You also must either post a video with at least 3, one-sentence Spanish captions while you make them or post a document, prezi, powerpoint, etc. with at least 3 pictures of you in them while making them with the one-sentence Spanish captions. Then, post this to your wiki by Monday, Nov. 3. Make sure to also include a picture of your final product!

(You do not need skull molds to make these – follow the instructions below after you watch the video above. They won’t be as detailed as the mold ones, but they will still work out great!)

NO MOLD? It’s OK! Spoon out a tennis ball-sized scoop of the mixture and form it into the shape of a skull. First, form it into a tight ball by cupping your hands around it. Then, narrow out the bottom of the ball to make the chin. Finally, make slight indentations into the top of the skull in the front with your fingertip to represent the eye sockets. As long as you’ve packed the sugar mix tightly enough when rolling it into the original ball, it will hold. Place it on the cardboard.

Added Extra Credit Opportunity – Visit the DIA or Mexicantown for Día de los Muertos

Standard

Exciting “En El Mundo” Extra Credit Opportunity

Visit the DIA or Mexicantown and see the “Ofrendas” for

El Día de los Muertos

 dia de los muertos big

To gain some extra last minute points or to get a head start on extra credit for 2nd Quarter, visit the DIA or Mexicantown during their Día de los Muertos celebration! 1st Quarter – due Monday, Nov 1 (Last day of the Quarter, no exceptions); 2nd Quarter, anytime before the next announced due date.

Mexicantown:

Every year in Mexicantown, different businesses and restaurants honor the deceased by setting out altars (ofrendas) and decorating their storefronts. The town has various times you can visit, some after school and some on the weekend until Tuesday, Nov. 5th. You can go and view the altars/offerings (ofrendas), window art, the Mexicantown Fiesta Center, and more! In order to get the extra credit, you must:

1) Take pictures of yourself next to at least 5 altars (ofrendas) and next to at least 2 pieces of window art.

2) You must list who the altars are honoring.

3) You must write 2 sentences in Spanish about each altar and window art that describes the display, your opinion about it or something you noticed or wondered about it.

4) This can go in a Word document, Powerpoint, Prezi, etc. Then, post it to your wiki page.

5) Please also bring in any other handouts/fliers that you get down there.

FOR MORE INFO: Visit Savor Southwest’s Detroit Website, http://www.savorsouthwestdetroit.org/calendar.html, click on the “Day of the Dead” first link listed, then click on “CLICK HERE FOR THIS YEAR’S BROCHURE” to view a PDF and map of where all the ofrendas and window art will be:

The DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts):

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will exhibit 28 ofrendas created by local artists from Friday, Oct. 24, to Sunday, Nov. 2. An ofrenda (offering) is an essential part of the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) holiday, a day to remember and honor the memory of deceased loved ones.”

In order to get the extra credit, follow the directions for “Mexicantown” above, but because there is no window art, take pictures in front of at least 7 altars.

FOR MORE INFO: Visit THIS LINK to the article on the DIA website that describes all about the event.
